Tempers flare under the blazing sun of Southern Italy in two popular operas dealing with hypocrisy and murder. Both are musically and dramatically in tune with Puccini’s Tosca and La bohème and feature such operatic highlights as the ‘Easter Hymn’ in Cavalleria rusticana and the tenor aria in Pagliacci.

One of the world’s leading and highly sought-after opera stars, tenor José Cura, will appear in the first four performances of both operas.

Critically acclaimed designer Mia Stensgaard has creates the captivating sets that invite audiences on a journey to hot-blooded Sicily and its world of seduction and jealousy.

Synopsis
CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA

Easter Morning in a small village in Sicily. Santuzza has been expelled from the church because of her affair with Turridu. And her world collapses when she finds out that Turridu has an affair with his former lover Lola, who in the meantime has married the wealthy coachman of the village, Alfio.

Santuzza confronts Turridu, who accuses her of stifling their love with her jealousy. As Lola even provokes her, Santuzza reveals the affair to Alfio, while the rest of the villagers are attending the Easter Mass. Alfio and Turridu challenge each other to a duel.

PAGLIACCI

Prologue
Tonio tells the audience that the show they are going to see is no fiction, but reality.

1 Act
A company of players arrive in a village in Calabria. The leader of the company, Canio, invites the villagers to the show later in the evening. Tonio declares his love for Canio’s wife Nedda, who turns him down, and he swears revenge. Nedda meets her lover from the village in secret, and they agree to escape together after the evening’s show. Tonio finds them and tells Canio, who pursues the paramour, who manages to flee, and as Nedda refuses to reveal her lover’s name, Tonio suggests to the jealous husband that he should look for the lover among the show’s audience.

2 Act
Evening; the villagers arrive, and the show begins. The plot of the play is almost indistinguishable from the reality which has just happened. And the similarity with real life eventually overwhelms Canio to such a degree that he can’t stay in character, but furiously demands to know the lover’s name. Nedda tries to keep the play going, but in vain, Canio’s desperate outbreak of jealousy can no longer be stopped.
