From The Russian Steppes | Symphony Concert no. 5
Prokofiev wrote his Fifth Symphony in 1944 after the Allied landing in Normandy. According to the composer, the work was written as “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit,” and the hope for a conclusion to the war can be heard in the light and uplifting notes of the symphony. Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony – also known as the Pathétique – would be the beloved Russian composer’s last great work. Tchaikovsky was obsessed with completing the work, and while he was composing it he had already sensed that it would be among his best.
