A grand visual and musical experience

A love story lies at the heart of Lars Kaalund’s romantic staging of Puccini’s masterful and tragic classic about the fateful encounter between a Japanese geisha and an American naval officer.

A grand international team of singers under the direction of American conductor and vocal expert Steven Sloane sets the stage for a musical experience of exceptional quality. Italian Maria Luigia Borsi returns in the title role, alternating with, among others, Chinese singer Hui He, who performs her signature role as Madama Butterfly. And Mexican tenor Héctor Sandoval will perform the role of Pinkerton for the very first time.

Set designer Christian Friedländer and visual artist and costume designer Wendy Egeskov have created a pure-lined, aesthetic set design that features floor-length silk kimonos to reflect a western vision of the orient, one which is inspired by the famous woodcut The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Japanese artist Hokusai.

Madama Butterfly is performed in Italian with Danish supertitles.
