Love, revenge, jealousy, power and frustration. Everything is on the line in Verdi’s Rigoletto, the opera that – with good reason – has been called a tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions.

Rigoletto is one of Verdi’s greatest triumphs and has been an audience favourite since it opened in 1851. The hunchbacked and ridiculed court jester Rigoletto struggles desperately to gain the respect of his peers. The only joy in his life is his beloved daughter, Gilda. Rigoletto is prepared to do everything in his power to protect her from the sorrows of life, but a terrible mistake makes his world fall apart, and in nightmarish hallucinations, he relives his mistake over and over again as insanity drags him further and further into its grip.

German director Aniara Amos, who has previously directed Don Giovanni and The Fairy Queen at the Royal Danish Theatre’s Old Stage, returns once again to the Royal Danish Theatre with a troubling tale in a crazy, insane and freaky David Lynch-setting. Full of paintings, art, and a complete new way to tell this classic and loved story
