Romantic fairy tale opera composed by the man who created the music for Denmark’s national play The Elves’ Hill (Elverhøj).

For the first time since 1838, you can look forward to an encounter with the composer Friedriech Kuhlau’s Danish Magic Flute – the singspiel Lulu. 

Kuhlau, who composed the now immortal music for Denmark’s national play The Elves’ Hill, composed his fairy tale opera in 1824. The inspiration for the libretto came from the folktale Lulu, or the Magic Flute, the same tale, which inspired Mozart and Schikaneder for their Magic Flute.

Kuhlau’s Lulu abounds with the magic of the Romantic age, complete with witches, fairies and evil sorcerers, telling a tale of good versus evil and about the power of love.

The Oriental prince Lulu wants to free the beautiful princess Sidi, who is being held captive by an evil sorcerer. To help him on his endeavour, Sidi’s mother presents him with a magic flute.

Lulu was a triumph for Kuhlau in his time and is still thought to be his main masterpiece as well as an important piece in the history of Danish music. The music abounds with catchy tunes, colourful harmonies, impressive choral passages and great originality – easy and marvellous to listen to.

Lulu is performed in Danish with English surtitles.
