Othello
Othello
By William Shakespeare
"Jealous souls are not ever jealous for the cause, but jealous for they are jealous. It is a monster begot upon itself, born on itself."
Othello is a coloured woman in a white man's world. She is at the top of the social ladder. She has won respect and valour in war, and has married the most eligible woman in town, Desdemona. In the shadows, the scorned Lago is hatching a shrewd plan, which will drive Othello into the throes of jealousy.
How can one look be enough to plant the seed of doubt about who you are? Is it possible for Lago singlehandedly to light the fire of jealousy, or does he simply provide the fuel to the spark of doubt, which already lives in Othello? And how do you hold on to who you are, when distinction and honour may be lost by even the smallest mistakes?
Othello is one of Shakespeare's great tragedies about man's struggle against the darkness that lies within. Elise Kragerup, one of the Royal Danish Theatre's own stage directors, will once again take to the Main Stage, where she has previously won the heart of the audience with her stagings of Romeo and Julie and Oedipus and Antigone.
