Sorella – a portrait

Sorella – a portrait

“It is always about life. All the time. It’s not even really about the dance, the dance is just the means to the end. Its about life and death, love and loneliness, loss, sadness, grief and tenderness.” – Sorella Englund

Sorella – a portrait is a story about the legendary solo dancer Sorella Englund, who has lived and survived through dance. Through her many years of dancing, she has interpreted the most powerful roles on the stage with ambiguous beauty and great empathy. Her characters have been shaped and inspired by dramatic events in her own life; for her, life and the dance are inseparable.

Sorella Englund has been at the Royal Danish Theatre since 1966 as solo dancer, character dancer, teacher and stage director. In this piece, which has been based on interviews with Sorella Englund, life and stage-life melt together in a sensuous dreamlike universe, where powerful personal experiences unfold in a deep and substantial story about living your life as an artist. Dedicated, impassioned and without compromise.

Sorella – a portrait is collaboration between Pernille Garde and the Royal Danish Theatre.

Sorella – a portrait has received funding from the Danish Arts Foundation, Knud Højgaards Foundation, and the Augustinus Foundation.
