By the Red Room based on the stories of Franz Kafka

Kafka’s stories are filled with animal figures. Insects, mice, jackals, a monkey, a dog, a vulture, leopards, a horse, a tiger – just to mention a few of the bestial protagonists in his warped existential universe.

A man wakes up transformed into a large, beetle-like bug. How is he going to get to work? Will he frighten his family out of their wits when they knock on the door of his bedroom?

That is just one scenario from the Czech author Franz Kafka’s many descriptions of human animals – and animal humans.

We explore a space that blurs the boundaries between human and animal. With Kafka, we raise questions about the qualities we associate with the human race, such as compassion, humanity, and civility. At times, the animals act highly civilised, sensitive and intellectual, while the humans come off as primitive and barbaric.

In continuation of last season’s award-winning staging of Metamorphoses, the Red Room’s actors and director Elisa Kragerup embark on a journey of exploration in a world of humans, animals – and everything in between.
