In Moqi Trolin and Kirstine K. Høgsbro’s version of The Lying-in Room, we are at a home with brand-new parents confronting a crowd of family and friends who are there to welcome the newborn.
What should have been a cosy afternoon devolves into a loopy tour de force of power struggles, misunderstandings and love cramps. Because when your wife implies that you are a cuckold who has also developed an extremely neurotic protective instinct, allowing only competent people permission to have contact with the baby, the situation is about as far as it gets from Danish cosiness, politeness and warm family feeling. Then add a childless big sister who connives to kidnap the baby, while a grandmother suffers a minor fear of death and suddenly cannot relate at all to the idea of being a granny.
The Lying-in Room 2.0 is a grotesque and entertaining comedy about trying to be together in the face of strong headwinds and challenges to the general harmony.
After successes such as Hvor er du egentlig grim, når du er liderlig, Lugter det lidt af lykke and Alle elsker kærlighed, dramatist Kirstine K. Høgsbro once again aims her razor-sharp view at how we are as people, both when we are alone and when we are together. The Lying-in Room 2.0 is staged by Moqi Simon Trolin, who made his name in Danish theatre with his debut production Sandholm, and who has recently reaped rave reviews for his play Varmestuen.
