Falk Richter
German playwright and director, born 1969 in Hamburg.
Falk Richter is internationally renowned for his work and distinct way of engaging with pressing social and political issues through performing arts. Questions of gender, heritage and belonging, as well as the politics of identity and counter-narratives play an important role in his work. Collaborating with actors, musicians, dancers, and video artists in processes, Richter works internationally (Germany, France, Sweden, Italy, Australia, Holland, Belgium and beyond) and mostly with diverse, international casts. Richter was voted „Director of the year“ by the German critics in 2018, and was given the title „Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres“ by the French Cultural Minister for his artistic work, furthermore he was given the „Special Teddy Award“ at the Berlinale Film Festival in 2018 for his outstanding achievements in theatre and his engagement for the LGBT+ community.
Since 2019 Falk Richter has been a professor at The Danish National School of Performing Arts.
The most performed plays of Falk Richter around the world are God is a dj, Electronic City, Under Ice, Trust, Small Town Boy and State of Emergency. Besides his own work Richter also directs classical plays and plays of contemporary writers as well as operas.
Falk Richter has been house director at Schaubühne and at Maxim Gorki Theater both in Berlin and at Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. From 2020 his is a member of the artistic team of Münchner Kammerspiele.
