Mr. Puntila is a Finnish landowner with a rather whimsical turn of mind. When he is inebriated, he is generous and believes that everyone should be treated equally. But when he’s not boozing, he is a brutal tyrant.

Suffering from a hangover, Puntila wants his daughter Eva to marry a dull and spineless attaché. But when he is drunk, the landowner wishes her to marry his driver and drinking buddy Matti, who is forced to put up with his master’s mood swings and grandiloquent thoughts about what it means to be human.

It turns out that Puntila’s daughter actually has a thing for Matti. Now it’s up to the unstable rich man to decide whether or not to grant his blessing to a marriage with the impoverished driver. In the midst of a drinking binge, he promises Matti a substantial dowry, while for his part, the driver decides to test Eva’s skills as a proletarian wife.

Award-winning and internationally recognised theatre duo director Staffan Valdemar Holm and set designer Bente Lykke Møller come to grips with Bertolt Brecht’s crazy comedy about alcoholism and inextricable class differences. Olaf Johannessen appears in the title role as the cracked character Puntila, joined by Lars Ranthe as his driver Matti.
