Windmill chasing! Cervantes’ masterpiece is the story of two hapless heroes, the idealist Don Quixote and his faithful companion, the wily Sancho Panza, who encounter all sorts of witchcraft and evil in their struggle for justice.

It was the great choreographer Marius Petipa, who in 1869 at the Bolshoi Theatre adapted the story of Don Quixote to the ballet stage, and his rendition is still considered the ultimate interpretation of this Spanish classic. Well aided by Ludwig Minkus’ rousing music, Petipa created a work based on Spanish themes rendered as a classical ballet. It was a huge success and has since become one of the most celebrated works in the international ballet repertoire. Petipa’s version has subsequently inspired numerous choreographers, among others Nikolaj Hübbe whose staging is here presented in the sublime colour ambiance of Jens-Jacob Worsaae’s set design.

Don Quixote is one of ballet history’s most entertaining stories, invested with southern romance, hot-blooded women, clattering castanets and sparkling dance. Bienvenidos!
