Raymonda is one of the great, classic pieces of the Russian ballet tradition. Now it is being performed for the first time in its entirety in Denmark.
Raymonda was the last piece created by the legendary choreographer Marius Petipa – a lavish display of bravura dancing. In his interpretation of the piece, Nikolaj Hübbe has chosen to move the story from the Middle Ages to the late 18th century rococo of Southern Europe.
The beautiful Raymonda is betrothed to a Hungarian noble, but a Moorish prince tries to win her favour. When she does not respond to his courtship, he feels inclined to resort to harsher measures, but Raymonda receives help from higher powers.
Raymonda is a spectacular and extravagant piece, abounding in classical ballet and character dance, pas de deux’, divertissements, czardas and mazurkas – all brought together by Aleksander Glazunov’s fabulous music.
Nikolaj Hübbe has teamed up with set and costume designer Richard Hudson, who also created the magnificent set design for La Bayadère, which was a great success a few seasons ago.
We wish to thank the Annie and Otto Johs. Detlefs’ Foundation (OJD) for the generosity, which has made the production of Raymonda possible.
