The Léonie Sonning Music Prize with Mariss Jansons

The Léonie Sonning Music Prize with Mariss Jansons

Symphony Concert #3

Gala concert in celebration of the 2018 recipient of Denmark’s most prestigious artistic award.

In celebration of the 2018 recipient of the Léonie Sonning Music Prize you are invited to a meeting of two giants of the world of classical music: Gustav Mahler’s overwhelming Symphony no. 2 and Latvian star conductor Mariss Jansons, winner of the 2018 Léonie Sonning Music Prize.

Mariss Jansons is one of the most significant conductors of today. He is the chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich, from 2004-2015 he was chief conductor of the legendary Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam – and he has been the guest of the most prominent symphony orchestras and music festivals in the world.

Mahler’s 2nd Symphony is one of those symphonies, which calls for all hands on deck – and not only for the orchestra. The impressive and overwhelming finale in the symphony’s fifth movement calls for both full chorus and soloists. At this gala concert, the requirements of the symphony will be met through a unique collaboration between the Royal Danish Opera Chorus and the Malmö Opera Chorus.

The two soloists at this concert are the argentinian mezzo-soprano Bernaeda Fink and the austrian soprano Genia Kühmeier.
